What is Green Dots?

Green Dots is a financial technology project integrated with Green Dot Corporation, a leading fintech and bank holding company. It functions primarily as a bridge between traditional finance and the digital asset ecosystem, providing essential banking-as-a-service (BaaS) infrastructure for major crypto platforms.

How Does Green Dots Work?

Green Dots operates through an embedded finance platform known as 'Arc.' This technology allows partners like Crypto.com to offer FDIC-insured custodial accounts, enabling users to move funds between fiat and cryptocurrency seamlessly. It utilizes a network of over 95,000 retail locations (such as Walmart and CVS) as physical on-ramps and off-ramps for cash-to-crypto transactions.

What Makes Green Dots Unique?

Green Dots is unique due to its massive real-world retail presence, placing 96% of the U.S. population within three miles of a service point. Unlike purely digital on-ramps, it provides a physical 'cash-in' capability and offers 'pass-through' FDIC insurance of up to $5 million for user fiat balances by sweeping funds into a network of partner banks.

Who Are the Founders of Green Dots?

The project is rooted in Green Dot Corporation, founded in 1999 by Steve Streit and Benson Riseman. Steve Streit, a pioneer in the prepaid card industry, served as CEO until 2019. The project is currently led by William I. Jacobs (Interim CEO) and continues to be a primary infrastructure provider for the U.S. fintech sector.
